Benzalkonium Chloride (also abbreviated BKC, trade names include Zephiran, Roccal family) is a class of quaternary ammonium compounds (alkyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chlorides) sold commercially as mixtures of alkyl chain lengths (typically C8–C18) with strongest biocidal performance in C12–C14 homologues. It is a clear to pale-yellow, water-miscible liquid used as an effective non-oxidizing biocide and cationic surfactant for microbial control, slime removal and corrosion inhibition in many industrial and consumer applications.

Benzalkonium chloride is a cationic surfactant and a non-oxidizing bactericide. It has broad-spectrum and efficient sterilization and algae killing capabilities. It can effectively control the reproduction of bacteria and algae and the growth of slime in water, and has good slime peeling. It has a certain dispersion and penetration effect, and also has a certain degreasing, deodorizing ability and corrosion inhibition effect. Benzalkonium chloride has low toxicity, no cumulative toxicity, is easily soluble in water, and is not affected by water hardness. Therefore, it is widely used in circulating cooling water systems in petroleum, chemical, electric power, textile and other industries to control circulating cooling. The growth of bacteria and algae in the water system has special effects on killing sulfate-reducing bacteria. Benzalkonium chloride can be used as a bactericidal antifungal agent, softener, antistatic agent, emulsifier, conditioner, etc. in the textile printing and dyeing industry. It can also be used as an antiseptic bactericide for wet wipes.
