Sodium Nitrate

Industrial-grade sodium nitrate, also known as Chilean nitre or nitrate of soda, is a significant industrial compound with a variety of properties and applications. 

Properties:
1. Appearance: Industrial sodium nitrate typically presents as colorless, transparent, rhombic crystals or as a white or slightly yellowish powder or granules. It has a salty taste with a slight bitterness.
2. Hygroscopicity: It is hygroscopic, meaning it tends to absorb moisture from the air, which can lead to deliquescence. 
3. Density and Melting Point: The relative density is 2.257, and it has a melting point of 308°C. It decomposes at its boiling point, which is also 308°C, releasing NaNO2 and O2. 
4. Solubility: It is highly soluble in water, liquid ammonia, and glycerol. It is sparingly soluble in ethanol and methanol, and very poorly soluble in acetone. 
5. Thermal Decomposition: Upon heating, it decomposes between 400–600°C to release N2 and O2. At 700°C, it releases NO, and between 775–865°C, it may produce a small amount of NO2 and N2O. The residue after decomposition is N2O. 
6. Neutrality in Aqueous Solution: When dissolved in water, the solution is neutral, and the temperature of the water decreases. 

Applications:
1. Water Treatment: Used as a corrosion inhibitor and to prevent metal embrittlement in boilers. It is often used in combination with sodium hydroxide to maintain a specific ratio. 
2. Agriculture: Widely used as a nitrogenous fertilizer to provide the nitrogen element required by plants. 
3. Industrial Products: Utilized in the production of glass, ceramics, and fertilizers. 
4. Explosives and Propellants: Acts as an oxidizing agent in the manufacture of gunpowder, explosives, and pyrotechnic compositions. 
5. Standards Compliance: Industrial sodium nitrate adheres to standards such as GB/T 4553-2016, which outlines requirements, testing methods, inspection rules, and packaging for industrial use.
